Shirley Gonzales in mountain biking Durango with her kids

Hello Durango,

My name is Shirley Gonzales.

I am a mother of three children and the owner of Pedal The Peaks bicycle shop. My children are in first, third and fifth grades at Park Elementary.

My family moved to Durango in 2021 to enjoy a quality of life that includes access to the great outdoors, a walkable, family centered community and people who love their neighbors. I believe that local government has the capacity to improve people’s quality of life. A highly walkable community encourages better health, connection with neighbors, and support of small businesses. As a member of the Durango City Council, I commit to being open and transparent to the public, supporting small business development and growth., And continued access to the great outdoors.

Experience

I served eight years on the San Antonio City Council and believe that my previous experience is valuable in addressing the issues Durango faces, especially regarding unhoused people and housing affordability for all. I am focused on economic development and supporting small businesses. I owned and operated a family business for 27 years in San Antonio, and currently own Pedal the Peaks bike shop here in town. My experience in maintaining and expanding small businesses brings value to Durango, where small businesses are both sources of identity and a source of income. As your City Council member, I commit to a balanced approach to economic growth, focused on supporting small businesses.

Durango can prosper if we take a collaborative approach to issues that face our community. I’m committed to facing the most difficult challenges with a collaborative approach, especially housing, affordability, workforce development, and community engagement.
